Note from the editor

The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center late last year projected a massive annual decrease — 21.7% — in enrollment of new high school graduates who immediately went on to college this past fall. Higher Ed Dive, along with several other media publications, covered this news.

Thursday, the center announced the drop wasn't as big as it initially reported due to an error processing the data. We've updated our original story to reflect the new information, and we've adjusted our other articles that reference the figure (here, here, here and here). You can read more about the change here.

Their correction shouldn't overshadow the bigger trend, however. The updated estimate — a 6.8% annual decrease, which includes additional data — is significant. And it affirms other recent data showing this year's enrollment losses are concentrated among students from low-income and historically disadvantaged backgrounds, and at community colleges.

We know our readers are keeping a close eye on enrollment patterns this year, and industry groups are working quickly to produce data that sheds light on the evolving situation. For those reasons, we thought it was important to inform you directly of this change.
