July 2, 2021 | Today's news and insights for transport leaders Note from the editor As you're reading this, I'm in California (probably sleeping). I decided to travel for 4th of July weekend, like many usually do. This time of year is infamous for its traffic, and my travels got me thinking about road safety, which is top of mind for the transport industry. But have the private and public sectors moved the needle enough?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would likely say, "No. There's room for improvement." This week, NHTSA ordered OEMs and fleets to report data on crashes involving vehicles with Level 2 or higher automation. That includes trucks with lane-centering assistance and adaptive cruise control up to fully autonomous trucks.
Today's newsletter takes a look at road safety concerns and what government agencies are doing about them. I wish you safe travels, this and every weekend. We're taking a break on Monday to observe the holiday, so we'll be back in your inbox Tuesday.
Take care,
