Sept. 10, 2021 | Today's news and insights for transport leaders Note from the editor Sept. 11 marks a day for reflection. This year feels weightier. Two decades have gone by.
I was just a kid then, so I've been learning more about the response and relief efforts as an adult. And as this anniversary nears, I wonder what it was like for the trucking industry. I imagine the FMCSA waived some HOS restrictions — a move I've become familiar with during the pandemic and in the aftermath of severe weather.
The agency recently extended its coronavirus-related emergency declaration through November, but it also asked permission to collect data and find out if fleets are using the added HOS flexibility. The American Trucking Associations told us in March that fleets, in general, are using it more as a safety net.
Today's newsletter explores HOS, inside and outside of urgent response. I want to know what you think: Is HOS relief a helpful lever for the FMCSA to pull in the wake of emergencies? Email me your thoughts.
