On this Day, WHO joins partners around the world to call for action to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) for, with, and by persons with disabilities. More than 1.3 billion people experience significant disability today, which represents 16% of the global population. Many persons with disabilities die earlier, are at increased risk of developing a range of health conditions, and experience more limitations in everyday functioning than the rest of the population. We call these poorer health outcomes “health inequities” because they are largely avoidable and driven by unjust factors within and beyond the health sector. 30 November - 12 DecemberCOP28The World Health Organization (WHO) will be at the 28th United Nations annual climate conference (COP28), which is taking place from 30 November until 12 December 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. As in previous UN climate conferences, WHO will be there to promote the health argument for bold, ambitious and urgent climate action that prioritizes the health of people and the planet in countries’ climate negotiations. COP28 will host the first-ever day dedicated to health and the very first climate-health ministerial, which will bring together ministers of health, environment, climate, finance and other sectors towards more ambitious action to address the rapidly growing burden of climate change on health. 4 - 6 DecemberWHO Member State negotiations resume on pandemic accord and IHR amendmentsGovernments will resume their seventh round of negotiations during 4-6 December on an international pandemic accord to protect the world against future pandemics. In 2020, low back pain affected 619 million people globally and the number of cases is estimated to increase to 843 million cases by 2050, driven largely by population expansion and ageing. To meet this global challenge, WHO is releasing guidelines on managing chronic low back pain in primary and community care settings, listing interventions for health workers to use and those to mostly avoid.
