Monday, 29 JanuaryHigh-level event: Trans fat elimination validation ceremonyJoin the WHO Department of Nutrition and Food Safety for a ceremony to recognize the first five countries that have demonstrated to have best-practice trans fat elimination policy and monitoring and enforcement mechanisms in place to eliminate trans fats from the food supply. The event will take place on Monday, 29 January 2024 at 11:00-12:15pm CET, with validation certificates awarded, for the first time to Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Thailand. Tuesday, 30 JanuaryEmbargoed virtual press briefing on World Cancer DayAhead of World Cancer Day on 4 February, WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will release the latest estimates on the global burden of cancer and WHO will publish a 115-country WHO survey, showing how a majority do not provide adequate cancer and palliative care. The estimates highlight the growing burden of cancer, its disproportionate impact on underserved populations, and the urgent need to address cancer inequities worldwide. Background The Tenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP10) to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and the Third Session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP3) to the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products will take place this year in Panama from 5-15 February 2024. With a user base of 600 million on console platforms and 1.1 billion on personal computers, these activities have solidified their status as both premier entertainment forms and have borne new streams of competitive gameplay, referred to as esports. The increasing prevalence of prolonged and loud audio exposure in these activities has raised serious health concerns, particularly related to hearing damage and sound-induced hearing loss. In response to this public health concern, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have commenced a work item to develop a global standard for safe listening in video gaming and esports activities, which includes a series of technical workshops. The 3rd workshop aims to provide a platform to experts, stakeholders, industry representatives and ITU members to continue work on the development of a global safe listening standard for video gaming and esports activities.
