11-22 March WHO at the 68th Commission on the Status of WomenRecognizing the critical importance of women’s health, gender equality and people’s universal right to health, WHO is participating at the 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), which is taking place in New York City in the United States from 11 to 22 March 2024. The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. It is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The priority theme of the CSW68 is “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.” More info here.
Monday, 18 March World Tuberculosis Day press briefingWhen: 15:00 CETAhead of World Tuberculosis Day (observed on 24 March), WHO will release a new investment case on TB screening and prevention to help countries reach the UN target on scaling up access to TB preventive treatment. TB remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious killers causing 1.3 million deaths each year and affecting millions more, with enormous impacts on families and communities. 18-28 March Ninth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) for a WHO instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and responseIn December 2021, the World Health Assembly established an Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) to draft and negotiate a convention, agreement or other international instrument under the WHO Constitution to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. The ninth meeting of the INB is to be held in hybrid format from 18 to 28 March 2024. At INB8, Member States requested the INB Bureau, formed by six officers, one from each of the six WHO regions, to develop a revised draft of the negotiating text of the WHO Pandemic Agreement. This draft will be the basis of textual negotiations at INB9. The opening and closing plenary sessions of the INB are open to WHO Member States, Associate Members, Observers and regional economic integration organizations, as well all relevant stakeholders. Friday, 22 March World Water Day: Leveraging Water for PeaceThis year's theme, "Water and Peace," highlights the critical connection between access to clean water and global peace efforts. World Water Day 2024 calls us to action, to unite around the theme of "Water for Peace" and to leverage water as a tool for building a more stable, peaceful world. It emphasizes the need for global cooperation on water governance, encouraging us to move beyond seeing water as a point of contention to a means of building peace and security.
