Spearheaded by the French government and the World Health Organization (WHO), and with partners including Institut Pasteur, Gavi, Unicef and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this event builds on the first-ever World Health Assembly resolution on meningitis that was initiated by France. This ground-breaking plan looks holistically at not only how to detect, control and beat meningitis in every region of the world but also how to rehabilitate those that already have the deadly disease. After a century of devastating epidemics, consigning the African meningitis belt to history is now a dream that could become a reality. Meningitis is a deadly and debilitating disease; it strikes quickly, causes serious health, economic and social consequences, and affects people of all ages in every part of the world. The "Defeating Meningitis by 2030" roadmap is an innovative multi-stakeholder approach that enables the public and private sectors to work together and defeat meningitis. If fully funded and implemented, the roadmap can result in preventing at least 900,000 deaths and 2.7 million infections of vaccine-preventable meningitis by 2030. It also means saving US$4-10 billion in medical costs for affected communities and the health sector in addition to billions more in indirect costs.
