Wednesday, 24 AprilVirtual press conference on global health issuesA virtual press conference on global health issues, including World Immunization Week and 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme of Immunization is scheduled on Wednesday, 24 April at 15.00 CEST. A media advisory with further information and connection details will be sent early next week. 24 - 30 AprilWorld Immunization WeekVaccines are one of humanity’s greatest achievements, saving millions of lives every year. This year, World Immunization Week will celebrate 50 years of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) – a collaborative initiative aimed at ensuring universal access to life-saving vaccines for everyone, everywhere. A new landmark study will be published, revealing the number of lives saved thanks to global vaccination efforts over the past 50 years. This will be the most comprehensive analysis of EPI’s global and regional health impact of vaccination against 14 diseases: diphtheria, Haemophilus influenzae type B, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, measles, meningitis A, pertussis, invasive pneumococcal disease, polio, rotavirus, rubella, tetanus, tuberculosis, and yellow fever. Additionally, WHO, UNICEF, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and The Gates Foundation are collectively launching 'Humanly Possible' -- a shared global campaign to mark the profound achievement of EPI and call on leaders to invest in immunization. A dedicated campaign website, with key data, messages and calls to action will go live on 24 April. The findings of the landmark study on the impact of EPI and the World Immunization Week messages will be discussed at the WHO virtual press conference on global health issues on Wednesday, 24 April. Thursday, 25 AprilWorld Malaria DayEveryone has the right to quality, timely, and affordable services to prevent, detect, and treat malaria, yet this is not a reality for all. In recent years, progress in reducing malaria has ground to a standstill. Not only does malaria continue to directly endanger health and cost lives, but it also perpetuates a vicious cycle of inequity. People living in the most vulnerable situations including pregnant women, infants, children under 5 years of age, refugees, migrants, internally displaced people, and Indigenous Peoples continue to be disproportionately impacted. The theme of this year’s World Malaria Day, “Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world”, aims to highlight barriers to health equity, gender equality and human rights in malaria responses worldwide – as well as concrete measures to overcome them.
