Click here Friday, 5 July 2024 | Issue 262 Monday, 8 July WHO announces new platform to boost access to medical technologies and devices WHO will introduce the first edition of an online platform "Medical Devices Information System (MeDevIS)", the first global open access platform designed to support governments, regulators and users in their decision-making on the selection, procurement and use of medical devices for diagnostics, testing and treatment of diseases and health conditions. WHO launches new toolkit to improve care for neurological disorders Neurological conditions are the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. The provision of services for neurological conditions is insufficient, especially in low and middle-income countries. WHO's new implementation toolkit will support countries to scale up care and meet targets as set out in the Intersectoral global action plan on epilepsy and other neurological disorders (IGAP). Tuesday, 9 July HLPF 2024 Side Event: The Health Argument for Climate Action 13:15 – 14:30 ET The event “The Health Argument for Climate Action" will take place on the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2024). It will contribute to the review of SDG Goal 13 “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”, and will highlight the crucial interconnection between health and climate change, as well as the health co-benefits of climate action. It will showcase how the World Health Organization (WHO), Member States and the health community are promoting solutions for building climate resilient and sustainable low carbon health systems via platforms such as the Alliance for Transformative Action for Climate and Health (ATACH). Moreover, it will present cross-sectional solutions across 3 key areas: clean energy, healthy and sustainable food systems, and healthy urban planning. This event will be hosted by the WHO, in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates, Germany, UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and The Rockefeller Foundation, in a hybrid format - online and in-person at UN HQ in New York. Wednesday, 10 July Advancing the development of a situation analysis on the health of Indigenous Peoples WHO Side Event at the 17th session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP)Room XXVI, Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland (in person only) In May 2023, the 76th World Health Assembly adopted Resolution 76.16 on the Health of Indigenous Peoples, requesting the WHO Director-General to develop a Global Plan of Action for the Health of Indigenous Peoples in consultations with countries, Indigenous Peoples, relevant United Nations and multilateral system agencies, as well as civil society, academia and other stakeholders. In response, WHO has initiated the development of a global literature review on the health of Indigenous Peoples. This analysis will inform the development of the Global Plan of Action. The objective of this side event is to present the preliminary findings of the literature review and to provide an opportunity for Indigenous Peoples to contribute and input to the ongoing research, which includes analysis of the following components:

This summary aims to shed light on the significant health impacts of tobacco use on individuals with asthma, emphasizing the need for comprehensive tobacco control measures. A webinar, “From Knowledge to Action: Addressing Tobacco Cessation in Chronic Respiratory Diseases” will also take place on 11 July 2024 from 14:00 to 15:30 CEST. This session aims to raise awareness of the link between tobacco use and chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), including asthma and COPD, and to highlight evidence-based strategies for early diagnosis, treatment, and management. The webinar will feature insights from health professionals and policymakers and will launch the Tobacco Knowledge Summaries on asthma and COPD. Registration link: https://who.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_B_nnA93zQTqzJ6bW1WT7Vg#/registration Friday, 12 July Embargoed press briefing on the WHO/UNICEF estimates on national immunization coverage WHO and UNICEF will launch the latest estimates of national immunization coverage (WUENIC), which provides the world’s largest dataset on immunization coverage trends for 14 antigens across 195 WHO and UNICEF Member States. The new data will provide a critical assessment of how well countries are doing in reaching every child with life-saving vaccines and meeting goals, such as those set by the Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030). This year's data will spotlight where progress is lacking, including where reversals in immunization coverage have happened and where there are areas of success. An embargoed virtual press briefing with immunization experts from WHO and UNICEF will be held on 12 July at 15:00 CEST. More details to follow next week.
