The first meeting of the Emergency Committee (EC) was convened on Wednesday, 14 August 2024, from 12:00 pm CEST by the WHO Director-General under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR) regarding the upsurge of mpox 2024. Background: The EC provides its views to the WHO Director-General on whether the event constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). In the event of a PHEIC, the EC advises on the temporary recommendations proposed by the WHO Director-General on how to better prevent and reduce the spread of the disease and manage the global public health response. The Director-General decides whether to accept the EC's advice. There have been 10 IHR ECs so far, including one concerning mpox, which held its first meeting on 23 June 2022.
