Notes to journalists: Recent outbreaks of Marburg, a disease known for more than 50 years and is only now going through vaccine trials, Mpox, where some tools exist but predominantly in countries which don’t have ongoing outbreaks, reflect how vulnerable society is to disease, and how often the global architecture fuels rather than prevents disease spread. The Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, which works to track and monitor global pandemic preparedness will be launching its annual report on the 14 October. The embargo will lift at 0900 Central European Summer Time. The report lays out in stark terms the complex and interconnected drivers of pandemic risk, including biosecurity threats, rapid technological innovation, misinformation, intensive farming and entrenched social and economic inequity. The report also provides a roadmap for the global response, calling on leaders to adapt, protect and connect to ensure that efforts to prevent pandemics today are strong and flexible enough to respond to the next pandemic.
