MEDIA ADVISORY Press conference on WHO Regional Committee and new report on progress towards SDGs in the Western Pacific WHEN & WHERE: Media are invited to a press conference with Dr Saia Ma’u Piukala, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for the Western Pacific, at 09:30 Manila time on Thursday, 17 October 2024. The press conference will take place at the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific in Manila, Philippines, and virtual participation will also be possible, via Zoom. WHAT: A new WHO report, Health Statistics in the Western Pacific Region 2023: Monitoring Health for the Sustainable Development Goals, will be released on 17 October. It identifies key advancements as well as urgent needs for accelerated action across the Region. Improvements in health service coverage over the past two decades have resulted in the WHO Western Pacific Region achieving the highest life expectancy among all WHO regions. However, significant challenges remain, with just six years left to achieve targets set for the SDGs. At the seventy-fifth session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific taking place 21-25 October 2024 in Manila, ministers, senior health officials and key partners from countries and areas across Asia and the Pacific will focus on the most pressing health needs in the Region and chart a course to address them. The Regional Committee is WHO’s highest governing body for the Region. WHO will present a new five-year vision for the Organization’s collaboration with governments and partners in the Region, propose action plans on health financing and digital health, and address topics such as the climate resilience of health-care facilities, transformative primary health care and oral health. HOW: Journalists are invited to confirm their attendance at the press conference by writing to wprocom@who.int. During the press conference, questions will be taken both from those attending in person and those online. For those attending in person at the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific — located at United Nations Ave, corner Taft Ave, Manila — please arrive by 09:15 to enable a prompt start to the press conference.
