Click here Monday, 4 November 2024 REMINDER MEDIA ADVISORY Virtual press conference on historic government commitments to end violence against children When: Monday, 4 November 2024, 16h CET/Geneva (No embargo) Subject: WHO is supporting the first-ever Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, to be held in Bogota, Colombia, 7-8 November. This first-of-its-kind event will set the stage for more than 120 countries, with over 80 Ministerial attendees, to agree landmark commitments to end childhood violence. Half of all children globally -- close to 1 billion -- suffer some kind of violence, whether at home, at school, in the community or online, including physical punishment, bullying, and emotional and sexual abuse. Commitments made at this historic event, which is hosted by the Governments of Colombia and Sweden together with the WHO, UNICEF and the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children -- will seek to drive down this violence -- whether through legal protections, promoting children’s safety wherever they live, go to school or play, and/or responding to the needs of child victims. This includes several pledges to ban corporal punishment -- affecting 6 out of 10 children worldwide. At the ministerial conference, countries are set to agree a milestone new political declaration on protecting children against harms from all kinds of violence, exploitation and abuse. This press conference will offer background information about the impacts of violence against children, the forms it takes and how it can be prevented -- as well as a preview of milestone moments expected at the ministerial conference.
