The day serves as a powerful reminder of the devastating global impact of epidemics, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and underscores the urgent need for strong public health systems, international cooperation and equitable access to healthcare. WHO works closely with governments to support efforts to build strong emergency and epidemic preparedness systems, as part of an overall approach to advance universal health coverage and strengthen primary health care systems.
