Click here ![]() Friday, 28 February 2025 | Issue 293 ![]() © WHO / Nazik Armenakyan ![]() Monday, 3 March World Hearing Day is held on 3 March each year to raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss and promote ear and hearing care across the world. Under the theme, "Empower yourself to make ear and hearing care a reality for all", the World Health Organization and the International Telecommunication Union will highlight the first global standard for safe listening in video gameplay and esport activities, which aims to reduce the risk of and prevent hearing loss among gamers. The new standard was developed under WHO’s Make Listening Safe initiative which seeks to improve listening practices especially among young people, drawing on the latest evidence and consultations with a range of stakeholders including experts from WHO, government, industry, consumers, and civil society. The campaign theme of the World Obesity Day 2025 is "Systems and health" (World Obesity Day 2025 | World Obesity Federation). World Obesity Day, spearheaded annually by the World Obesity Federation, is also supported by the Global Obesity Coalition, consisting of UNICEF and the World Health Organization. On World Obesity Day 2025, WHO will showcase its technical products and collaborative efforts with partner organizations, particularly members of the Global Obesity Coalition and other non-state actors, aiming to engage different audiences as well as highlight the obesity reduction efforts and initiatives being done at both regional and country levels. ![]() Friday, 7 March Lancet publication on causes of maternal death A new publication in the Lancet Global Health will shed light on the reasons why women die during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. The report is WHO’s first global update to the causes of maternal death in over a decade. It comes ahead of 2025’s World Health Day on April 7th, which will focus on maternal and newborn health. Understanding the causes of maternal deaths is critical for improving survival and long-term health outcomes for women. The paper will highlight the need to strengthen key aspects of maternity care.
