WHA Highlights
Day 1 of the 78th World Health Assembly (19 May)
The Seventy-eighth World Health Assembly (WHA78) opens at the Palais des Nations in Geneva at 09.00 CEST today, 19 May. On its first day, the WHA78 will meet in Plenary, General Committee and Committee A. The detailed programme of work can be found in the Daily Journal N°1, available in six languages of the United Nations (UN).
Simultaneous interpretation will be available in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. The live webcast of the proceedings can be accessed here and the provisional list of speakers is available here (general discussion in the Plenary).
The working hours of the Health Assembly are from 09.00 to 12.00 and 14.30 to 17.30 CEST.
Highlights of the day:
- Election of the President and officers of the Assembly, adoption of the agenda
- Address by Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General (approximately 11.45 CEST)
- Consideration of the draft text of the pandemic agreement (Intergovernmental Negotiating Body to draft and negotiate a WHO convention, agreement or other international instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response) in Committee A.
Committee A will take up the draft text of the pandemic agreement (contained in documents A78/10, A78/10 Add.1 and A78/INF./9) upon commencement of the general discussion in the second plenary meeting (starts at 14.30 CEST).
