The objective of the updated vaccine composition is to enhance immune responses against circulating variants and provide broader protection, as SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, continues to evolve. TAG-CO-VAC advises manufacturers that monovalent LP.8.1 is the recommended antigen for COVID-19 vaccines. Previously recommended antigens from the JN.1 lineage (JN.1 or KP.2) remain suitable alternatives. Vaccination remains important and should not be delayed while awaiting LP.8.1-based vaccines. TAG-CO-VAC is an independent group of experts that advises WHO on vaccine composition. They convened in December 2025 for their twice-yearly meeting to review the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants; immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 vaccination; and the performance of vaccine products against circulating variants.
