Click here ![]() Monday, 12 January 2026 MEDIA ADVISORY Virtual press conference on global health issues New reports on taxes on sugary drinks and alcoholic beverages will be launched, and WHO will update on cervical cancer prevention and control When: Tuesday, 13 January 2026 at 13.30 CET/12.30 GMT Hosted by: Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General Subject: Global health issues, with special focus on taxes on sugary drinks and alcoholic beverages, and on cervical cancer prevention and control As governments face mounting health costs and fiscal pressures, better-designed health taxes can reduce harm, generate sustainable revenue, and support essential public services, without increasing the burden on households. In new reports to be launched at the press conference, WHO will provide a global assessment of taxes applied to alcohol and sugary drinks, including trends, policy gaps and recommendations for these taxes to be more effective in reducing noncommunicable diseases and injuries. Also, as January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, WHO will update on the progress being made in countries, and globally, to protect girls and women from cervical cancer, including through the WHO Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative.
