As governments face mounting health costs and fiscal pressures, better-designed health taxes can reduce harm, generate sustainable revenue, and support essential public services, without increasing the burden on households. Two new WHO reports take a hard look at global taxation of alcoholic and sugar-sweetened beverages, revealing striking trends, policy gaps, and missed opportunities for action. Early access to the reports is offered exclusively to journalists. Please write to guerraja@who.int (cc mediainquiries@who.int) to request a copy. The embargo on the materials will lift at 14.00 CET/13.00 GMT on Tuesday, 13 January 2026. A virtual press conference will be held at 13.30 CET/12.30 GMT on Tuesday, 13 January. A media advisory with further details will be sent soon. The joint WHO/NCD Alliance webinar titled "Cheaper Drinks, Costly Consequences" will take place at 15.00 CET/14.00 GMT on 13 January.
