Capex, capex, capex. As the biggest fleets on the stock exchange release Q1 financial results, capital expenditure has emerged as a recurring theme — and it's all the more interesting in the current trucking environment.
Most fleets, including Old Dominion Freight Line, have cited volume surges and the need to expand capacity as justifications for shopping sprees. Then, there's Yellow (formerly YRC), whose total tonnage actually decreased in Q1. Its procurement push is for other reasons.
But no matter why fleets are buying tractors, there might be a bit of a delay. The semiconductor shortage is holding up production — Schneider's CEO said it's about six weeks behind on receiving truck deliveries.
