Note from the editor

Welcome back to our Wednesday look into the archives. This week will be our final look at talent, including a peak at the last interaction before an employee says goodbye: the exit interview.

In Associate Editor Morgan Fecto's March 2019 look at the topic, she examined the impact of "triggering events," which cause an employee to begin looking for another job. She also noted the importance of exploring what appealed to the employee about the new job they're taking, if they're leaving for a new job.

Both of these elements are especially critical now, with 65% of employees looking for a new job, according to a recent pulse survey from PwC. But most employers already seem to have a grasp of why their workers are on the job hunt, the survey showed, even if they are still falling short in offering the kinds of incentives those employees want.

Sniffing out triggering events might be the real strength of the exit interview. Could it be burnout? Was a too-strict leave policy the final straw? Or maybe the worker just wanted a career change.

When a worker is headed for the door, the exit interview may be your best opportunity to find out.
