Click here  Friday, 12 July 2024 | Issue 263  Photo credit: WHO/Enric Catala  Monday, 15 July The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2024: Special Event on Financing to End Hunger, Food Insecurity and Malnutrition in All its Forms 11:00-13:00 EST/17:00-19:00 CEST In the lead-up to the official launch of the UN's The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report on 24 July at G20 in Brazil, FAO and its co-publishing partners will present key messages from the report during a Special Event focused on the SOFI 2024 theme, "Financing to End Hunger, Food Insecurity and Malnutrition in All its Forms." This event will take place on the margins of the ECOSOC High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). Please note that no new figures will be discussed until the official launch. The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) is an annual flagship report jointly prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Every year, it monitors and analyses the world's progress towards SDG targets 2.1 (End hunger and ensure food security) and 2.2 (End all forms of malnutrition) in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The report targets a wide audience including policymakers, international organizations, academic institutions, and the general public.  Tuesday, 16 July SunSmart Global UV App launches with new features to enhance sun protection The SunSmart Global UV App, a key tool in the fight against UV-related health issues, has an updated version at the peak of the northern hemisphere summer. It is available for free on both Apple App and Google Play stores, it empowers users to take preventive measures against excessive UV exposure, a leading cause of skin cancer and other related diseases. Excessive UV radiation from the sun leads to over 1.5 million skin cancers annually. The app, co-branded by WHO, WMO, UNEP, and ILO, offers UV and weather forecasts, highlighting when sun protection is essential. More information will be available on Tuesday 16 July at this link https://www.who.int/teams/environment-climate-change-and-health/  16 - 17 July Tenth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) for a WHO instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and responseOn 1 June 2024, the Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly extended the mandate of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) to draft and negotiate a convention, agreement or other international instrument under the Constitution of the World Health Organization to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. The Health Assembly mandated the INB to finish its work as soon as possible, and submit its outcome for consideration by the Seventy-eighth World Health Assembly in 2025, or earlier by a Special Session of the World Health Assembly if possible in 2024 with only one agenda item that would be dedicated to this outcome. The World Health Assembly also decided that the INB should hold its next meeting in July 2024. In this light, the 10th meeting of the INB (INB10) will be held in hybrid format from 16-17 July 2024. The meeting will consider and agree on the INB’s workplan and meeting schedule and, as appropriate, updates to the INB’s method of work, consistent with the decisions by the 77th World Health Assembly and the Special Session of the Health Assembly held in December 2021 that established the INB process. The World Health Assembly’s decision regarding the INB’s continued work allows for the INB Bureau’s rotation, as appropriate, and if agreed within each region. This will be for consideration at INB10, as appropriate. The opening and closing plenary sessions of the INB will be open to WHO Member States, Associate Members, Observers and regional economic integration organizations, as well all relevant stakeholders. It is anticipated that the open sessions will be publicly webcast and archived for later viewing.  Thursday, 18 July Launch of the WHO Tobacco and Asthma Knowledge Summary WHO will publish a new knowledge summary focused on the critical relationship between tobacco use and asthma. This summary aims to shed light on the significant health impacts of tobacco use on individuals with asthma, emphasizing the need for comprehensive tobacco control measures.
