Note from the editor

In the last week, ransomware attacks across the U.S. have shut down schools. Cyberattacks are the new snow day.

Baltimore County Public Schools planned to resume online classes Wednesday after a ransomware attack discovered last week shut down classes. In Alabama, following a cybersecurity threat, Huntsville City Schools are asking users to keep HCS devices powered off and to not log onto school platforms until further notice.

K-12 education is facing ransomware attacks at every turn. Already, the education system has resource constraints, and with broad user bases, hackers can prey. But who is supposed to defend schools?

Into the New Year, Cybersecurity Dive will lead the discourse on this question. In the meantime, please read our coverage on the small players at the mercy of ransomware.

I also want to hear from you: What organizations should be responsible for protecting resource-constrained public institutions? Email me directly at neide@industrydive.com.
